General Manager Marine Operations
We are seeking an experienced marine industry professional with senior level management experience to join one of Cornwalls fastest growing companies. The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group is unique in the UK in terms of its breadth of transport operations including shipping, airline and airport services providing lifeline links for both passengers and freight between the Isles of Scilly and the mainland. The Group operates the Scillonian III passenger ferry and has recently acquired a freight ship that is currently being modified to replace the current, smaller vessel, the Gry Maritha. Inter-island freight and mail services are provided using two smaller vessels. The Company also operates Penzance Dry Dock to maintain its own vessels and provide services to external clients.
Due to its continued expansion the company is looking for an individual who can lead and develop the Groups marine operations and its asset replacement strategy including the specification and procurement of a new passenger ferry. Reporting directly to the CEO you will be a key member of the senior management team. The role encompasses all aspects of operational delivery and regulatory compliance but with a strong focus on financial and commercial performance, resource planning and excellent customer service. The incoming leader will have the ability to shape the structure of the marine-related divisions of the Group for the next phase of its evolution.
The key areas of responsibility include:-
- Ensuring that all marine operations and engineering services are fully compliant with all regulatory requirements and safety standards (including fulfilling the role of DPA and CSO)
- Future enhancement of the marine SMS and quality standards for the marine and Dry Dock businesses
- Team structure, leadership, motivation and coordination in order to maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of current and future resources
- P&L responsibility for Isles of Scilly Steamship Shipping Company and Penzance Dry Dock
- Business strategy and business planning in collaboration with CEO/CFO
- Commercial or market development opportunities including Penzance Dry Dock
- Asset maintenance, enhancement and replacement strategy (from concept through procurement to operational delivery)
- Management structure, staff resources and support
- Marine customer services improvements and communications
- Strategic relationships and partnerships with harbour authorities, local government and other stakeholders
- Efficient working practices and resilience of shipping operations
- Close coordination of marine activities with quay operations and freight services
Requirements:
The successful candidate will have extensive senior level experience in the following:-
- Extensive shore-based operational and general management experience gained within the shipping industry (e.g. superintendent role)
- Unlimited Chief Engineer or Master Mariner
- Strong inter-personal and people-oriented management skills with experience of leading and motivating multi-disciplinary teams
- Thorough understanding of SMS design and safety compliance
- Substantial experience of working closely with all regulatory bodies and stakeholders (including MCA, class and flag, harbour and local authorities, customers, suppliers)
- P&L or budgetary management experience with commercial acumen
- Project management skills
- Relocation to West Cornwall

Work Experience Requirements
All applicants must have previous experience in working on ships.
Language Requirements
Good knowledge of the English language is required.
Certificates and Qualifications
Mandatory STCW certificates are required from all applicants.
