The Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) is responsible to the Superintendent for monitoring, maintaining, and contributing to the effective upkeep of all shipboard electrical equipment across the fleet.

Responsibilities

As the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for electrical engineering, the ETO provides specialist advice, guidance, and hands-on support to Ships’ Engineering staff, Chief Engineers, and Superintendents to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all electrical systems.

  • Assist with general electrical maintenance, repair, and fault-finding across the fleet.
  • Lead and contribute to technical upgrades on ships, working on all types of electrical machinery and equipment owned and operated by the company.
  • Operate plant and equipment, diagnose faults, and carry out repairs to restore systems to safe operational use.
  • Install and oversee new electrical works to specification, including but not limited to:
    • Marine power generation and distribution systems
    • Switchgear
    • Control and PLC systems (including code interpretation)
    • AC and DC systems up to and including 1000V
    • Electrical systems supporting marine propulsion

Requirements

  • Electro-Technical Officer Certificate of Competency (III/6), or
  • A nationally recognised Level 3 NVQ (or equivalent) in a relevant electrotechnical discipline.
  • Extensive experience in:
    • Maintenance, installation, commissioning, and upgrading of electrotechnical installations
    • Diagnosing faults in electrical systems using appropriate tools and test equipment
    • Returning systems to safe and operational condition
