The Staff Captain is second-in-command and deputy to the Master. They are responsible for overseeing all deck operations, safety, security, maintenance, crew conduct, and navigation readiness. They supervise key officers and ensure smooth coordination between departments.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations
- Direct all deck department activities and ensure effective communication of the Master’s directives.
- Maintain close coordination with department heads and ensure a collaborative, professional shipboard environment.
- Assume command of the ship when necessary.
Safety & Security
- Serve as Ship Security Officer, responsible for implementing the Ship Security Plan.
- Lead all emergency response efforts, safety drills, and investigations in collaboration with safety/security officers.
- Ensure proper training and certification for all crew emergency duties.
Navigation & Bridge Oversight
- Oversee bridge operations, ensuring navigational readiness and bridge team coordination.
- Work with the Master to enhance pilotage and ship maneuvering skills.
- Ensure proper loading/stability conditions, ballast management, and documentation.
Maintenance & Technical Oversight
- Supervise all deck maintenance, cleanliness, and technical equipment via the AMOS PM system.
- Manage inventory, deck stores, contractors, and deck-related compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
Crew & Conduct
- Monitor crew behavior, training, grooming, and dress code enforcement.
- Support HR and review seafarer documentation for role compliance.
- Mentor and oversee deck cadet training and development.
Logistics & Compliance
- Supervise guest/cargo loading, securing the vessel for sea in coordination with onboard departments.
- Ensure proper stowage of materials and manage interaction with stevedores and vendors.
- Support compliance with public health protocols, safety orientation, and tender operations.
Requirements
- Master Mariner Unlimited License (Class I)
- Required regulatory and company training
- At least two contracts in a major cruise line
