The Master’s role demands a figurehead position, and you will need to support the Company and crew in all matters, even those that fall outside your immediate responsibility. You are expected to take responsibility and be held accountable for the vessel and crew under your charge.

Responsibilities

The Master has absolute command of the vessel and has overriding authority over all aspects of its operation, at all times. In case of emergency the Master shall take such action as in their judgement is necessary for the protection of life, property and the environment. The Master may request the Company’s assistance as may be necessary.

You are expected to take hold of and lead on delivering the Company values. The ‘top-down’ approach should always be followed (the crew will follow your lead).

The Master forms part of the company’s Group Vessel Replacement Project Team and will be required to attend meetings by invitation.

The vessel’s Master is responsible for:

  1. Line managing all onboard departmental heads (Chief Officer, Chief Engineer).
  2. Ensuring the safe and legal operation of their vessel throughout their period of duty.
  3. Implementing, managing, and maintaining the safety, security, and environmental policies of the company.
  4. Implementing, managing, and reviewing the safety management system on their vessel.
  5. Managing and maintaining documentation in relation to Company Instructions to Masters.
  6. Ensuring all vessel certificates are in date and renewed prior to expiry.
  7. Ensuring the vessel complies with legislative and commercial operational requirements to ensure vessel availability as per company requirements.
  8. Ensuring, as the ultimate authority, the safety of all passengers, crew and property and the protection of the environment in which the vessel operates.
  9. Ensuring the vessel performs required operations within company and port authority’s requirements. Optimising turnaround time in port, ensuring the efficient freight handling operation on the quayside throughout the cargo loading and unloading sequence.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Certificate of Competency (CoC) – Minimum 3000GT, near-coastal.
  • ENG1 Medical.
  • All STCW mandatory courses including updated refresher training, as required.
  • Proficiency in Medical Care on Board including updated refresher training.
