This is an excellent opportunity to join a leading towage operator providing port & harbour towage, offshore & ocean towage, and marine support services across the UK and beyond. With a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and reliability, we operate a modern fleet of tugs supporting a wide range of port and marine operations.

Based in Liverpool, the team is expanding, and we are seeking an experienced Vessel Superintendent to oversee the safe, efficient, and cost-effective technical management of our vessels.

Responsibilities

The Vessel Superintendent will be responsible for ensuring that all assigned vessels in Liverpool and Belfast are maintained and operated in compliance with company standards, class, flag state, and statutory requirements. This hands-on role involves close coordination with vessel crews, workshops, and shore-based management to ensure maximum vessel availability and performance.

  • Oversee the day-to-day technical management of assigned tugs.
  • Ensure compliance with ISM Code, class, flag, and statutory regulations.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise maintenance, dry dockings, and repair activities.
  • Monitor vessel performance, machinery condition, and fuel efficiency.
  • Control maintenance budgets and track costs to ensure cost-effective operations.
  • Liaise with Masters, Chief Engineers, and crew to support safe and efficient vessel operations.
  • Arrange procurement of spares, equipment, and technical supplies.
  • Conduct vessel inspections and audits, ensuring findings are rectified promptly.
  • Support the implementation of safety and environmental management systems.
  • Participate in incident investigations and follow-up actions.
  • Assist in planning and delivery of technical training and crew familiarisation.
  • Contribute to fleet improvement projects and newbuild/refit initiatives where applicable.
  • Guide/assist/mentor colleagues in a constructive and respectful manner.
  • Adhering to, promoting, and encouraging the Company’s safety and environmental policy and culture
  • Attend scheduled office technical meetings and contribute towards system and process reviews, to drive continuous improvement

Requirements

Essential:

  • STCW Class 1 or 2 Engineer Certificate of Competency (or equivalent shore-based experience).
  • Experience as a Technical Superintendent or similar role, preferably within the towage, offshore, or short-sea shipping sectors.
  • Strong understanding of marine engineering systems, maintenance planning, and dry-docking procedures.
  • Working knowledge of ISM, ISPS, and MLC requirements.
  • Excellent problem-solving, planning, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple vessels and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Competent IT skills (Planned Maintenance Systems, MS Office, SharePoint & procurement tools).

Desirable:

  • Previous experience with ASD, Voith, or conventional tugs.
  • Knowledge of UK port operations and towage industry regulations.
  • Degree or HND in Marine Engineering or related discipline
