Junior Chief Engineer (Permanent) – Ferries | United Kingdom

We’re proud to represent a respected maritime company seeking an experienced and qualified Junior Chief Engineer to join their engineering department on a full-time, permanent basis.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a licensed engineer who takes pride in technical excellence, safety, and leadership — contributing to the smooth operation of modern RO-Pax and passenger vessels.

Key Responsibilities

As a Junior Chief Engineer, you will:

  • Take direct responsibility for the safe and efficient running of the engine room, primarily during night hours.
  • Deputise for the Chief Engineer (days) as required by vessel rosters.
  • Carry out planned maintenance and repair work in accordance with the vessel’s maintenance program.
  • Ensure all machinery, systems, and equipment operate safely and efficiently in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Act in accordance with your responsibilities in the vessel’s emergency organisation.
  • Identify and manage risks to personnel, vessel, and the environment, implementing appropriate control measures.
  • Report any incidents, near-misses, or deficiencies in machinery, systems, or safety equipment to the Senior Chief Engineer.
  • Maintain thorough familiarity with the ship’s operational and technical procedures.
  • Support the training and mentoring of junior engineers, promoting continuous improvement and teamwork within the engine department.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant parts, procedures, and requirements of the Safety Management System (SMS).

Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must hold:

STCW III/2 Chief Engineer Unlimited Certificate of Competency

STCW Basic Training, including:

Personal Survival Techniques

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting

Elementary First Aid

Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities

STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB)

Valid ENG1 medical certificate

A minimum of 12 months sea service as Chief Engineer or Junior Chief Engineer on modern RO-Pax or passenger vessels (preferred)

Fluent English communication skills

Full right to work and reside in the United Kingdom
