We are looking for experienced ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICER ready to join SILVERSEA cruises ASAP, contract 4 months +/-1, required experienced as such, all valid Certificates, good references/recommendations.
Position Summary
- Responsible to deliver and maintain environmental compliance with all regulations by overseeing and assisting shipboard personnel in complying with National and International laws and regulations.
Reporting Structure
- Reports to the Captain and Staff Captain.
- Subordinates – four Able Seaman, three Fire Patrol and one Daily Fireman.
Safety Duties:
- Participates in crew and passenger safety drills according to instructions.
- Always complies with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures.
- Leads by example by taking care of Health and Safety of self and others.
- Ensures that all work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and safety devices are being used correctly.
Education/Experience/Qualifications:
- Valid STCW certification.
- Valid CoC A-II/2.
- Appropriate certification as required by regulations.
- Extensive experience as an Environmental Officer onboard passenger ships is essential.
- Physically and medically fit.
- Moral integrity is required.
- Train the Trainer, Public Health, Sanitation and Environmental training courses.
- Alaska experience required.
- Coast Guard, Port State Control and Public Health experience.
Language requirements:
Fluent English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board. This also includes the ability to give and receive instructions in verbal and written forms and to effectively and efficiently engage with guests and crew members. Additional languages are considered beneficial.
Computer knowledge:
Good working knowledge of AMOS, and Microsoft Office applications.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Required to stand, walk long distances, reaching and sitting. Repetitive motion of bending, going up and down stairs, climbing ladders. Lifting or pushing of up to 50lbs. The position requires overtime work and irregular schedules. Works in all areas of the vessel with noise, light traffic, distracting environments as well as an office environment.

Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for the verification and oversight of shipboard environmental management.
- Ensures compliance with applicable environmental regulations during the planning stage of the voyage and its execution, including but not limited to the following:
- Hazardous materials and hazardous waste management.
- Garbage management and disposals.
- Waste water discharges.
- Air emissions.
- Bunker transfers and fuel quality.
- Oily water discharges and sludge off loadings.
- Responsible for being familiar with the operation and location of all life-saving, fire-fighting and pollution prevention equipment.
- Identifies high risk areas and provides clear recommended solutions.
- Ensures effective implementation of environmental policies.
- Performs internal environmental audits.
- Provides information and consultancy during inspections.
- Monitors the oil record book, garbage record, sewage and grey water discharge and ballast log books.
- Monitors and supervises the correct management of hazardous materials.
- Evaluates new methods to reduce and minimize the ships environmental impact.
- Practices pollution prevention.
- Responsible to monitor the follow up of environmental findings.
- Plans, implements, monitors and reviews both protective and preventative measures.
- Keeps up to date with current practices, technology and regulatory environmental compliance.
- Identifies environmental training needs and conducts training as required and as per Company standards, establishing a good correlation with other departments when scheduling crew for training and exercises.
- Practices good documentation and record keeping, to be maintained for all training taking place.
- Actively promotes environmental awareness amongst guests and crew.
- Attends mooring stations as instructed by the Staff Captain.
- Supervises crew assigned to mooring stations and ensuring that mooring operations are conducted in accordance with the advice in the Code of Safe Working Practice.
- Has a full knowledge of every aspect of safety features of the vessel. Being fully conversant with the Company’s VMS.
- Assisting in tendering and zodiac operations as required by the Staff Captain.
- Assistance with training, development and support of Junior Officer’s with regards to mooring, tender and zodiac operations.
- Keeps the Master and Staff Captain promptly and fully informed of all problems and matters of significance.
- Attends and contributes to monthly Health and Safety meetings as per Company requirements.
- Accurate completion of log books and other assigned documentation.
- Responsible for maintaining the ships official log book, which requires a thorough working knowledge of the applicable Flag State legislation and requirements.
- Executes strict practices to ensure that the vessel is operated in accordance with the following regulations and Company policies, during all prevailing circumstances and conditions:
- International Safety Management Code.
- ISPS Code.
- SOLAS.
- Code of Safe Working Practices.
- MARPOL.
- Pollution prevention.
- STCW.
- Oil Record Book.
- ILO/IMO/ITF/MLC 2006.
- Ballast Water Management.
- US CDC Vessel Sanitation Program.
- Stability and Trim.
- Merchant Shipping Legislation of the Bahamas.
- Investigates environmental accidents and incidents in collaboration with the Staff Captain.
- Accountable for ensuring that Company, International Authorities, Port Health Authorities and any other relevant bodies are maintained and complied with. Reporting to the Master any instances where the ship is unable or fails to comply.
- Conducts Public Health sanitary inspections.
- Monitors the treatment and recording of potable, service and swimming pool water. Initiating corrective action when treatment is not of acceptable standard.
- Coordinates and organizes the ships pest control procedures. Monitoring the effectiveness of pest control and instigating corrective action where necessary.
- Prepares a comprehensive handover of duties according to and via form OP196A.
- Practices good people management, maintaining proper conduct within the Deck department and other departments around the ship.
- Observes and enforces uniform and grooming standards according to Company policies.
- Required to be issued with appropriate PPE and fit tested for the purpose of assisting with Infection Prevention and Control. Required to wear assigned PPE correctly in line with company guidance.
- Required to assist with controlled, secure movement of people requiring isolation.
- Required to carry out any duties as required relating to Infection Prevention and Control as assigned by Senior Management.
- All other duties as assigned.

Mandatory STCW certificates are required from all applicants.
