A large cruise line is seeking an Apprentice Purser to join one of their ships. The Apprentice Purser assists senior Pursers and the Crew Payroll Manager with money order sales, the collection of crew accounts, payroll distribution, and other crew-related financial matters. They also assist in guest-related financial matters such as gratuity posting and/or balancing; reconciling prepaid amenities; and obtaining method of payment for guest accounts. Candidates are required to have completed basic education equivalency and experience in a payroll or accounting processing role.
Requirements
Responsibilities:
- Conduct oneself in a professional and courteous manner at all times in interactions with guests and shipboard employees.
- Assist the Purser with the Sign-ON/OFF process in the property management system.
- Reconcile the active Family Member (FM) list “Sign-ONS” and verify passport collection.
- Assist with issuing and replacing FM ID cards through the automated security system.
- Maintain and replenish office inventory and equipment supplies.
- Assist with sale of money orders, collection from Crew Calling Card machine, mail handling, collecting FM accounts, and distribution of FM documentation.
- Support FMs with questions regarding transportation and visa requirements.
- Perform clerical duties such as filing, photocopying and general office work.
- Assist Administration Purser – Documentation with entry of guest passport and related information and support pier staff during embarkation and disembarkation.
- Assist Financial Controller with foreign currency exchange, travelers’ checks and collection of guest payments.
- Perform bank duties regularly, manage and balance the daily cash float.
- Understand and follow the Safety & Quality Management Program and be ready to act in emergencies.
- Attend meetings, training and other work-related activities as required.
- Perform related duties as assigned, including financial responsibilities for budget, expenses and revenue achievement, and cost containment through proper record keeping.

Strong communication, problem solving, decision making, and interpersonal skills. Basic computer skills and understanding of basic accounting principles such as debits/credits and adjusting entries. Completion of high school or basic education equivalency required.
