Marine Investigator (Engineering) – Permanent – London – Excellent package

A vacancy is available for a marine investigator with a marine engineering background to join the Investigations Department of a reputable Flag State Administration, responsible for the conduct and execution of marine safety investigations globally. This role provides the opportunity to make a real difference, influencing and improving maritime safety on an international level.

With a substantial fleet consisting of multiple vessel types, there is an obligation to investigate all very serious marine casualties. The successful candidate will need to draw on their extensive experience and knowledge to collect, analyse and interpret evidence from marine casualties that occur anywhere in the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide technical expertise to marine safety investigations and the international marine casualty investigation community to improve marine safety globally
  • Collection of evidence and witness interviews
  • Conduct detailed analysis in order to identify safety issues and draft recommendations without apportioning blame or liability
  • Prepare accurate, thorough and clearly written reports
  • Review reported data to proactively identify safety issues and lessons learned
  • Deliver presentations on technical issues to external stakeholders
  • Prepare briefing papers for international engagement and represent the Authority and Department as required.

Experience Required:

  • Hold a Chief Engineer STCW III/2 (Engineering) Unlimited licence
  • Relevant experience investigating marine accidents
  • Demonstrable understanding of International Maritime Organization instruments and, in particular, the Casualty Code
  • Inter-personal and cross-cultural skills
  • Ability to use tact and compassion when meeting victims and witnesses of marine casualties
  • Must have the right to work in the UK

You will be required to travel in the UK and abroad, in some cases at short notice.

The role is based in the London office. Allowing for casualty attendance, you will be required in the office approximately 50% of the time.
