I am looking for a Mate to work on ferries in the Shetland Islands. This is a permanent position.

Responsibilities:

  • The carrying out of watchkeeping duties to the requirements of the Master;
  • The regular testing of critical navigational systems and stand-by systems and the recording of such tests;
  • Ensuring proper stability, trim and draft conditions at all times;
  • The safe loading & discharging of cargo, passengers, stores, fresh water, sewage and ballast water, ensuring appropriate capacity consistent with safe, legal and efficient operations;
  • Perform Customer Care duties in respect of passenger comfort, service information and safety related information / instructions. Updating Customer Information services as required.
  • Ensuring that the vessel’s exterior and decks are kept clean & tidy and that all gear not in use is kept stowed away;
  • Ensuring that daily checks are made of ballast, void space and hull compartment soundings. Where approved remote tank level indicating systems are fitted, these may be used as a daily check, however a manual check should be made once per week, where possible;
  • The supervision and recording of maintenance work and repair work carried out in the deck department;
  • When so appointed, to carry out the functions of Safety Officer for the vessel;
  • Ensuring that personnel under their command have a proper understanding of the safe operation of equipment, machinery and electrical systems they are required to use in the course of their duties;
  • Ensuring that workers under their command have a proper understanding of the contents of applicable risk assessments and that appropriate personal protective equipment is used;
  • The Security of revenue and tickets, both onboard and en-route to local banking facilities. They may delegate the handling of money & tickets to a deckhand, but will remain ultimately responsible to ensure that secure methods of handling are in place;
  • The security of terminal ramp huts and storerooms;
  • The counting of passengers as required in Fleet Regulations;
  • Liaison with the vessel’s Engineer with respect to:
    • Vessel maintenance, inspection & defects
    • Dry-dock work lists
    • Safety equipment and housekeeping
    • Management & supervision of Deckhands
    • Testing of critical ship systems and equipment
    • Loading of fuel, stores, fresh water, etc and the discharge of waste oil and sewage
    • Planning & conduct of Drills and on-board training

Requirements:

  • STCW Reg II/3 OOW<3000t or greater
  • ENG1 Medical
  • Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats (STCW A-VI/2-1) or equivalent
  • Good communication skills with command of a small crew or team
  • Previous experience on ferries would be advantageous

Applicants must be living within a commutable distance as no relocation package is offered. Applicants must also have an existing right to live and work in the UK.
