Chief Engineer – AHV
The Ships Chief Engineer has the authority and responsibility for taking any necessary actions for safety, pollution prevention and the efficient operation of the ships, engine room and associated mechanical / electric services.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Chief Engineer is responsible for:
- Ensuring all new technical department officers and ratings are familiar with relevant procedures.
- Efficient operation and maintenance of all plant and equipment associated with safety and anti-pollution as defined by statutory legislation and Company procedures.
- Maintaining stand-by plant and systems in a completed state of readiness to meet any emergency requirements.
- Testing stand-by systems on a regular basis and in accordance with Company procedure.
- Notifying the Master immediately of any defects which may affect ships safety or put at risk the marine environment.
- Assigning engineer officers or ratings specific roles with respect to the engineering department’s responsibilities under the safety management system.
- Investigating non-conformances and applying corrective action as agreed with the ship’s Master.
- Regular inspections of all plant and equipment.
- Ensure Oil Record Book and Engine Logbooks are accurate and up to date.
- Ensure vessel is in compliance with ISM.
COMPETENCIES
- Ability to maintain, operate and test vessel plant and equipment.
- Ability to ensure vessel plant and equipment can be used efficiently, in a safe and pollution free manner.
- Clear communication and good command of English both spoken and written.
- Good IT skills/Microsoft Office
- Work prioritisation and planning, considering safe systems of work.
- Ability to implement Company policies and procedures.
- Ability to take initiative to prevent and/or minimise defects.
- Good fault finding and investigative abilities.

- Chief Engineer Unlimited
- Personal survival techniques
- Advanced fire fighting
- Medical care on board
- Personal safety and social responsibilities
- Proficiency in designated security duties
- Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats
