We are seeking a Chief Officer to work onboard a freight ship working out of the South of Cornwall with a 2 week on/off rotation.

This company is unique in the UK in terms of its breadth of transport operations including shipping, airline and airport services; providing lifeline links for both passengers and freight between the Isles and the mainland.

Job Summary

  • To perform the role of Chief Officer onboard
  • The Chief Officer is the line manager for all Deck Crew; it is anticipated that you lead and manage the crew accordingly and take responsibility for the crew under your charge.
  • The Chief Officer is the Safety Officer onboard, they require an up-to-date knowledge of Maritime regulations, codes, and best practices for the vessels they are operating onboard.
  • The Chief Officer should strive for continuous improvement in all areas, leading by example.
  • You are expected to take hold of and lead on delivering the Company values.

Responsibilities
The Chief Officer is responsible for:

  1. Performing the role of Chief Officer onboard company vessels as required by the company.
  2. Implementing, managing, and maintaining the safety, security and environmental policies of the company in accordance with the SMS.
  3. Deputising for the vessel’s Master.
  4. Undertaking duties as assigned by the vessel’s Master.
  5. Mentoring and encouraging direct reports and cadets to foster a good working relationship amongst vessel departments and wider stakeholders.
  6. Promoting vessel and company values positively to all staff, passengers and customers.
  7. Complying with and contributing to improve the company’s SMS.
  8. Performing the role of Safety Officer.
  9. Applying relevant and company health and safety practices for effective prevention of injuries and accidents onboard.
  10. Actively promoting a just safety culture, including participation in company hazard identification, risk management and behavioural safety schemes.
  11. Ensuring vessel performs cargo and passenger transfer operations within company and terminal/port authorities’ requirements and optimising turnaround time in port, including facilitating efficient operations within the passenger and freight handling departments of the company.
  12. Maintaining ships security procedures.
  13. Ensuring the vessel is maintained in readiness for external inspections to obtain the necessary trading approvals.
  14. Ensuring the vessel is maintained to satisfy the requirements of flag state and port state control.
  15. Managing shipboard resources for maintaining efficient operations and discipline on board.
  16. Ensuring all deck and associated ship structure/fittings are tested and maintained appropriately.
  17. Ensuring readiness for operation of vessel’s LSA and FFE systems and equipment.
  18. Operating, testing and maintaining all cargo related equipment and systems. Machinery malfunctions and repairs must be reported to the engineering department for action.
  19. Maintaining vessel’s stability as per the requirements of IMO minimum stability criteria.
  20. Carrying out navigational watchkeeping duties and ship handling skills to the requirements of regulations.
  21. Booking training for crew where required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Chief Mate’s Certificate of Competency (CoC) – Minimum 3000GT, near-coastal.
  • ENG1 Medical.
  • All STCW mandatory courses including updated refresher training, as required.
  • Proficiency in Medical Care on Board including updated refresher training.

Desirable Qualifications/Skills

  • Crisis Management (training can be given).
  • Ship’s Security Officer (training can be given).
  • Good, proven ship handling skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good IT skills
