Electronics Team Lead – Farnborough – Up to £80,000 p.a.

We are looking for a high skilled and experienced Electronics Engineer that will lead a small team in the design, validation and qualification of the electrical system of our in-house developed autonomous underwater drone and its handling system.

We need Electronics Engineers who are:

  • Self-driven to deliver high quality electronics design and create innovative solutions.
  • Have the skill and the experience to lead a small team of electronic engineers and the ability to drive the team to meet the requirements within the approved deadlines.
  • Are hands-on, curious, self-motivated, and, energised by the opportunity to solve complex problems and to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Possess strong communication skills to enable you to co-ordinate well your team and to collaborate with the other teams in the engineering department.
  • Have experience in bringing designs from concept to fruition and supporting their simulation, manufacturing, testing and integration.
  • Are able to produce detailed documentation and put in place systems that would allow the team to work with best efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will lead a team of electronic engineers to execute complex electronic design projects from concept to boards manufacturing, including testing, troubleshooting and integration with other subsystems.
  • You will specify subsystem requirements based on high level functional requirements, including subsystems power budgets.
  • Evaluate electronic components including sensors, electronic submodules from vendors with a focus on PCB design, microcontrollers, data conversion chips, passive components, semiconductors.
  • Evaluate and implement best PCB design practices, industry standards and wiring practices.
  • Confirm systems design by designing tests and validation routines.
  • Preparing product reports and recommendations on components, to management, for selection.
  • Evaluate and implement DC power control electronics with position feedback, communications electronics, data storage electronics.
  • Assist the software team in developing, testing, debugging and programming firmware.
  • You will be responsible of providing to the operation and procurement team BOM and Gerber files to be sent to third party companies for the manufacturing of high quality PCBs.
  • Test and performance evaluation of the timing system.
  • Aid safety officer in compliance with applicable electrical laws and safety best practices.

Skills Knowledge and Expertise

  • Degree in Electronic Engineering, Physics or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience in the design of complex electronic circuits and/or robotics systems (including part selection, circuit design and simulation, PCB layout).
  • Ability to coordinate with 3rd Party electrical design engineering firms to deliver PCB products.
  • Have a proactive attitude and a professional approach to enable working independently with confidence.
  • Be a productive team leader with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to design and perform testing of components for reliability and functionality.
  • Display in depth knowledge of microprocessors, high efficiency step-up and step-down DC/DC converters, A/D converters, control systems (PID), timing systems, motor drivers, DC motors, stepper motors, digital encoders, RF systems and of the following protocols: SPI, I2C, RS232, RS485, RS422, Ethernet.
  • Ability to design circuits with limited power budgets.
  • Experience in EMI shielding design and noise level reduction on analogue systems.
  • Firmware development experience in C or C++
  • Experience in CAD software related to PCB experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of lab equipment (oscilloscope, function generators, mustimeters, spectrum analysers, etc.) and good soldering skills.
  • Excellent applied physics and mathematics skill related to electronic design.

Desirable:

  • In depth experience in the design of the electronics for autonomous drones. Experience in the design of digitizers (24 & 32bit ADC), DC motor sizing and selection.
  • Experience with high accuracy time synchronization systems based on OCXO/ VTCXO/atomic clocks.
  • In depth knowledge of lithium ion batteries and BMS.
