Job Description: Harbour Master (Canal & River Trust) - Gloucestershire - Permanent - Competitive Salary
ARM is delighted to partner with the Canal & River Trust, one of the UK's biggest charities, in the search for a Harbour Master for their team in Wales & South West.
They are seeking to appoint a Harbour Master based at Sharpness Port. At the top of the Severn Estuary, the port is a gateway to their inland waterways and handles both private pleasure boats and cargo vessels.
This is a truly unique opportunity to manage the harbour and the successful individual will be responsible for lock operations and navigational safety for all vessels passing through the gateway of Sharpness.
Reporting to the Regional Operations Manager, you will lead a small team of 6 direct reports to deliver successful daily operations, including approximately 300 shipping movements and around 450 pleasure vessel movements per year.
Your leadership and motivational skills will also extend beyond colleagues, to include volunteers supporting the operation of the network/ harbour through a broad range of activities and events.
You will be highly visible to the public and visitors, so it is important that you are a natural ambassador for the Trust, Wales & South West, and Sharpness Port.
Other key responsibilities include (but not exhaustive to);
* Continuous improvements in Safety, Port Operations and efficiency
* Compliance with Port Marine Safety Code (PMSC) and the statutory vessel reporting procedures (eg Consolidated European Reporting System)
* Control of operations (and any emergency) within the Port and direct shipping.
* Safe passage of vessels in the harbour and adjoining waterway, taking into account vessel suitability, weather forecasts, legislation and safety.
* Compliance with the Trust's safety policy and standards.
* Line management for small operations team
* Providing out of hours support and supervision where necessary and emergency response where required
* Effective resourcing plan to handle all vessel movements safely and efficiently.
* Administer towing on The Gloucester & Sharpness Canal and River Severn
* Specialist advice regarding legislation relating to Ports/Harbours and Docks and other relevant statutory, technical or industry practice.
* An ambassador for the Trust - positively engage with the public, visitors and volunteers at the Port.
The ideal candidate will have extensive operational management experience within a Maritime environment and have an excellent track record of leading, motivating and developing a team.
You will have all-encompassing commercial acumen, be an excellent communicator and able to engage and influence across a wide range of stakeholders, along with a true desire to consistently deliver an excellent customer and visitor experience.
The successful candidate will have a Harbour Masters' Diploma or other relevant marine qualification and have an extensive understanding of the Port Marine Safety Code and all relevant port/dock legislation.
