Principal Specialist - Strategic Regulatory Projects (Classification) – Permanent - Southampton/Hybrid – Highly Competitive

A leading Classification Society is recruiting for a Principal Specialist Strategic Regulatory Projects to join the Regulatory Affairs team.

This role will be suitable for a candidate who can keep on top of longer-term regulatory developments and understand, and explain to others, what they mean at both a regulatory level and an industry implementation level. You will need to have a high-level technical overview, particularly for the current decarbonisation and digitalisation challenges.

Reporting to the head of Regulatory Affairs, this role provides an oversight of future regulatory and industry developments which may have an effect on the Company’s strategy. Currently this includes longer term developments such as decarbonisation and digitalisation.

Other duties will include;

  • Identify future regulatory opportunities and risks arising from IMO, EU, IACS and other forums. Assess, interpret, record and communicate opportunities and risks.
  • Deliver regulatory insight on long-term developments to internal stakeholders, and represent the Company’s interests to external stakeholders and forums.
  • Own and progress the implementation into service delivery and governance procedures of selected implementation items originating from the regulatory horizon scanning.
  • Represent the Company at external meetings and forums in order to achieve effective influence externally and to positively represent the Company at these forums as and when required.
  • To mentor / coach other employees, as appropriate, to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application. In particular, to engage actively with the IMO/IACS implementation and coordination team.
  • To pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.

The successful individual will have practical working understanding of the maritime regulatory and commercial regimes, including an oversight of how statutory requirements are put into practice by a compliant ship, ship operating company or shipyard.

You will have a Degree (or equivalent) in a related subject and have membership of an appropriate professional institution, or working towards membership.

You will have an excellent command of the English language, be an excellent communicator and have a pro-active approach to problem solving.

To be considered for this role, you MUST be based in the UK/have the immediate right to live and work in the UK

All applicants must have previous experience in working on ships.

Language Requirements

Good knowledge of the English language is required.

Certificates and Qualifications

Mandatory STCW certificates are required from all applicants.
