A world leader in high-performance gearboxes design is looking for a Lead Design Engineer to join the team. In this positions, you will have technical leadership and execution responsibility, leading activities in design, analysis and production of marine gearboxes for the global marine industry.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and analyse marine gearbox assemblies and components. Including, but not limited to: parallel shaft gears, lubrication pipework, gear castings and housings and bearings all with minimal guidance.
  • Lead design reviews, ensuring gearbox designs are fit for purpose and meet the customer agreed specification requirements.
  • Select and review transmission and auxiliary components such as brakes, pumps, motors, clutches, thrust bearings, lube systems and control systems.
  • Create and support detailed design with calculations, layouts, drawings, 3D models, FEA, rotor dynamics and complex analysis for all the aspects of marine gearboxes for tendering and gearbox contracts.
  • Produce system and component specifications and supporting the sourcing team so that the proposed product design meets the requirements.
  • Liaise with customers and suppliers throughout the tender and design stages.
  • Produce detailed manufacturing drawings. Create specification for bought out equipment and generation of Bill of Materials on company CAD & PLM systems.
  • Take the lead role in investigating performance issues or product failures, provide technical support, guidance and analysis reporting root causes and corrective actions.

Requirements:

  • Have a Degree in an Engineering discipline.
  • Have in-depth knowledge and experience of rotating machinery and gearbox design / configurations and their performance.
  • Have experience in types of propeller and selection of propulsion clutches.
  • Have an understanding of Export controls of military data.
  • Have in-depth knowledge and experience of marine propulsion and the importance of gear macro and micro geometry on NVH.
  • Have good communication skills to liaise with customers, suppliers and colleagues.

You must have an existing right to live and work in the UK. Applicants will ideally be living South of Birmingham or be prepared to relocate near that location at your own expense.
