Deputy Harbour Master – Contract – Shetlands – Competitive day rate

Due to an increased workload and a number of exciting projects coming up, we are looking for a Deputy Harbour Master in the Shetlands for up to 1 year contract. Accommodation to be provided for the right candidate.

As DHM you will manage the pilot launch and towage team and the customer focused, efficient and effective delivery of services in accordance with the values, objectives, targets and statutory obligations.

Responsibilities include:

  • To act as Deputy Harbour Master and Pollution Officer for the Harbour Authority as required and to share in the operational management of the same
  • To act as Statutory Harbour Master when required
  • To liaise with the Designated Person as required
  • Manage the safe operations and security of the marine assets.
  • Manage and monitor service delivery in compliance with the ISM Code, Port Marine Safety Code, Health and Safety at Work Act, Aviation and Maritime Security Act, and other relevant legislation
  • Ensure effective risk-management procedures are in place including undertaking internal audits of the Port Marine Safety Code Safety Management System
  • As a duty Harbour Master participate in an on call system, covering out-of- hours supervision of all harbour operations.
  • Manage operations in contingency planning and emergency response

Experience Required:

  • Certificate of Competency as Deck Officer – Class I (Master Mariner) or Harbour Master’s qualification or such other qualifications as would satisfy full (AFNI) membership of the Nautical Institute or equivalent
  • Qualifications related to Ports and Harbours operations, such a Pollution Response, VTS, Security, Health & Safety, etc
  • Experience of pollution response and clean ups.
  • Knowledge of ISM & ISPS Codes
  • Experience of port business – particularly ports security, fishing, marine renewables and / or aquaculture (Desirable)
  • Must have right to live and work in the UK
