Naval Architect – Permanent – Devon – £Competitive
A global leader in the design & build of award-winning luxury motor yachts, requires an experienced Naval Architect to join their busy design office based in Devon, UK.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for:
- Providing support to the Senior Naval Architect, the Naval Architect role is responsible for dedicated focus on the regulatory and technical requirements pertinent to each model; ensuring that these are met in a safe, pragmatic and cost-effective manner.
- Project lead for new Development projects
- Working with external Naval Architects to ensure design estimates are accurate.
- Contributing to the technical specifications relevant to each model
- Supporting of the introduction of new models to the business;
- Review of specification and weight estimate, including coordinating technical assessment and approval for manufacture.
- Coordinating weight control with Development & Production teams on new build models and NSO team on subsequent slots.
- Coordination with Sales and Aftersales teams (including owner’s representatives) to assist and resolve technical disputes.
‘As built’ determination of hydrostatic and performance characteristics of vessels;
- Conduct of Inclining Experiments in accordance with industry best practice in a safe manner, protecting personnel and the yacht under assessment.
- Intact stability assessments of relevant loading conditions for each vessel dependent on requirements.
- Working with the Engineering Team to validate performance in ‘first of line’ sea trials.
- Assisting with the NVH team to determine ‘first of line’ assessment.
- Authoring of specific drawings, models or other technical data which is necessary to demonstrate compliance to the relevant Rules or Regulations.
- Collation, creation and submission of all relevant documentation required for compliance verification, including Technical Documentation packages to demonstrate compliance with the Recreational Craft Directive and/or Class and Flag state legislation.
- Hands-on involvement in design activities with the ability to provide technical guidance at all levels in the solution of a variety of design challenges.
- Proposal of equivalent arrangements to regulatory bodies, including challenging rule interpretations, as required to meet business requirements.
- Engagement with relevant Classification rules, flag state legislation and associated international standards development to inform and protect business interests.
The ideal candidate will have experience of;
- Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering degree qualification or relevant experience in lieu
- Some practical experience of building or repairing yachts is an advantage.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, Maxsurf suite and Siemens NX.
- Working knowledge or understanding of, Rhino 6 and Siemens Teamcenter
- Experience with CE Pro software and Smartsheet would be an advantage.
- Fully conversant with both regulatory and nautical terminology
- Understanding of the Recreational Craft Directive/Regulations, associated ISO Standards and international shipping regulations together with their practical application to the business.
