Purpose of the Job

  • Act as alternative Designated Person Ashore (DPA)
  • Have oversight of vessel, barge and mooring maintenance
  • Ensure that equipment and installations on board are in good condition and ready to operate.
  • Ensure effective and efficient maintenance, operations and repairs of propulsion installation, incl. auxiliary equipment, pumps, steering gear, electro-technical installation, piping system with valves and cooling systems.
  • Operational support to Captains and Crew
  • Ensure compliance with marine regulatory bodies such as, but not limited to the MCA and PLA
  • Responsible for Health, Safety and Hygiene whilst on company property
  • Ensure that statutory requirements and company policies and procedures are followed and deadlines are met

Context

  • Deputy DPA
  • Sound knowledge of Marine main and auxiliary engines and systems
  • Able to priorities objectives in line with planned PMS
  • Resolution of defects in timely and effective manor

Main assignments

  • Keep actively up-to-date to QHSE manual and procedures.
  • Instruct QHSE regulations, incl. emergency procedure to engineers, visitors and contractors.
  • Ensure safe and healthy execution of activities in engine room and to technical equipment.
  • Monitor, maintain and repair (if possible) electrical and mechanical systems, installations and equipment.In line with planned maintenance policies and guidelines of the company and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Ensure that vessels are in good condition and ready to operate at all times.
  • Assist Operations team with inspections and suggest modifications when possible.
  • Monitor and ensure completion of all deficiencies noted in the planned maintenance system.
  • Actively participate in ship yard repair and maintenance periods.
  • Monitor fuel oil, lubricating oil and fresh water levels.
  • Oversee, plan and monitor all bunkering and oil and bilge waste operations.
  • Keep engine room journal, maintenance and oil record and inventories status reports and maintain logs for all equipment.

Vessel Maintenance

  • General servicing and maintenance of company vessels
  • Fault diagnosis of engines and associated systems
  • Mechanical repair/replacement
  • Ensure that all work is logged as per company standards
  •  Ensure the effective implementation and maintenance of a cataloguing system for parts
  • Prepare reports as required in an accurate and timely manner
  • Assist in major rebuilding work during out of water inspections

Person Specification

  • Proven knowledge of good seamanship by experience in lower ranks or as Chief Engineer.
  • Fully acquainted with relevant and up-to-date ship legislation.
  • Holds a medical certificates and documents related to the safe manning act for Chief Engineer on board a vessel.
  • Profound knowledge of diesel propulsion and electricity generated systems preferred. Should also have good knowledge of support systems such as compressors, pumps, hydraulics, water makers, plumbing, refrigeration and heating, proficient user of computer systems.
  • Minimum of STCW III/2 Chief Engineer Motor <3,000KW near coastal
  • Good working knowledge of the ISM code, Health and Safety and MARPOL
  • Minimum of 3 years’ service as 2nd Engineer
  • Previous experience of working with small vessels

Competencies

  • Experience of working successfully with accrediting and regulatory bodies and implementing associated
  • programmes.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in the marine industry with extensive previous sea experience
  • Ability to understand and extract relevant information from charter parties. Good knowledge of maritime
  • regulations and marine industry standards as well as HSEQ practices.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory bodies requirements for safe and legal operations
  • Good time management skills with the ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Demonstrates sound teamwork, strong interpersonal skills and confident and effective communications

Work Experience Requirements

All applicants must have previous experience in working on ships.

Language Requirements

Good knowledge of the English language is required.
