If there is one characteristic that marks us out at the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), it is pride. We are proud to use our professionalism and expertise to safeguard animal and plant health across the UK for the benefit of the environment, the economy and the millions of people who live here.

Join us and you will be partf of a diverse team of over 2,000 skilled and committed professionals who share this inspiring goal. Together, we protect endangered wildlife, conduct research into bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases and vaccines, facilitate the international trade in animals, identify and control endemic and exotic diseases, and manage a programme of bee inspections, diagnostics, research and training and so much more.

The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is a non-departmental public body which is responsible for licensing and regulating marine activities. In this team, you will play an essential part in supporting the fishing industries as you take on an absorbing and challenging role that will take you from your desk to ports, harbours and out to sea. You will:

  • ensure compliance with the relevant marine, environmental and sea fisheries policies and legislation; taking advantage of a broad array of training opportunities to develop your understanding of these areas;
  • join the fisheries patrol vessel to conduct physical inspections at sea. You will also work on land to monitor fish landings, check catches, and inspect logbooks, landing declarations and transport documents;
  • conduct investigations and interviews where non-compliance is suspected, compiling any resulting case files and attending court as required;
  • offer your expert opinion and advice to those in the fishing and marine industries; including commenting on marine licence applications and inspecting related coastal sites;
  • enforce marine nature conservation legislation, including that which relates to protected areas.

Working flexibly to coincide with the irregular hours of the fishing industry (for which you will be paid overtime), this is a unique opportunity to gain a great insight into our important work. Benefitting from the support of colleagues who are committed to making a difference to the marine environment, we work collaboratively to achieve tangible results. As such, the team are keen to take on new Marine Enforcement Officers who are excited about the opportunity to learn in a fast-paced environment. Naturally inquisitive, you will be able to prioritise your own workload, and you will understand the importance of meeting deadlines. With great verbal and written communication skills, you will proactively seek out missing information so that the most accurate decisions can be reached. Taking ownership of your tasks, you will work in partnership with colleagues to support our important mission, and you will relish the chance to learn from our experts in the field.

We support the personal wellbeing of everyone in APHA. Our benefits include generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, salary sacrifice benefit options, and an employee discount scheme. We also offer flexible working.
