  • The vessel Master has overall responsibility for the safety of the vessel, it’s passengers and crew.
  • The Masters responsibilities are as follows:
  • Ensuring that all shipboard operations are conducted within the company integrated management system (IMS) and within the confines of the related classification society and flag state requirements. At all times to maintain a current working knowledge of the aforementioned.
  • Have a comprehensive knowledge of the ‘Code of Safe Working Practices for Seaman’ (CoSWP), ‘Marine Pollution Regulations’ (MARPOL) and the ‘Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea’ (COLREGS) and at all times adhere to these.
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the ‘Safety of Life at Sea’ (SOLAS) convention.
  • Implement the company health, safety and environmental policies.
  • To be familiar with and have an understanding of the vessel stability booklet and in particular the relevant section on damage stability.
  • Co-operate with the classification and flag state authorities concerning any mandatory vessel inspections and spot checks. He will willingly provide copies of vessel and crew certification and not obstruct the authorities unnecessarily.
  • Ensure all customs and immigration requirements are met and that local port by-laws are adhered to.
  • Ensure all manning requirements are adhered to according to STCW (as amended) and that he verifies all crew certification is present and current.
  • Provide company management with regular input to assist in the continual improvement and update of the IMS by utilising it’s built-in mechanisms.
    Keeping the vessel copy of the IMS up to date according to latest office issued revision and for keeping vessel crew informed of any changes relevant to safety and operations.
  • Updating shipboard charts and publications including any relevant ‘Marine Guidance Notices’ (MGN), ‘Marine Safety Notices’ (MSN) and ‘Marine Information Notices’ (MIN) according to company issued updates.
  • Onboard induction and ongoing training of vessel crew according to the individuals own and company training record programs. It is very much the company culture to identify talent, train and promote from within. It is the responsibility of the Master to identify these opportunities, inform company management and agree a training plan.
  • The Master is to promote a proactive approach to problem solving where possible and is to encourage this culture within his crew.
  • He is also required to effectively delegate to his subordinates to ensure all relevant daily, weekly and monthly checks are completed successfully.
  • He is to give daily briefings of all crew and passengers in regards to onboard safety procedures and daily operations.
  • Conduct safety and emergency response drills in line with the IMS and keep a record of these.
  • Maintain accurate logbooks in line with the company IMS and International Maritime Organisation (IMO) requirements. These logbooks will be available at all times for inspection by the relevant authorities.
  • Liaise directly with the charterer or charterer’s representative on day-to-day operational logistical matters. Should he at any time feel that a request has been made outside of the contract agreed scope of works (of which the company will ensure he is briefed) he must contact the management to seek clarification. It is his duty to keep the welfare and safety of the client of utmost importance.
  • He is responsible for maintaining the vessel according to the planned maintenance system (PMS), an integrated part of the IMS.
  • It is the Masters duty to limit downtime through unexpected breakdown or scheduled maintenance without compromising the safety of the vessel. In these matters he must co-ordinate with company management and the charterer.
  • Keep in touch with industry developments and report relevant information to the company management team.
  • Report frequently to company management team as per the requirements of the IMS. These reports must be completed and sent to the office the day they occur. This is without exception.
  • For avoidance of doubt the vessel Master is responsible to the directors and management team of the company. The vessel Master retains seniority over all personnel onboard the vessel. The Master has the final decision in matters relating to vessel and personnel safety. He will adhere to company issued instructions unless he deems it compromises the safety of the vessel and the welfare of it’s crew and passengers.
  • At all times the Master is ‘the man on the ground’ and therefore representing the company. It is his responsibility to ensure the company is represented in the best possible fashion by presenting the vessel and it’s crew as professionally as possible. The Master shall make sure company uniform policy is adhered to at all times when on duty.
  • The Master has overriding authority to take whatever action considered necessary for the protection of lives, the safety of the vessel and protection of the marine environment. In certain situations this may mean deviation from documented procedures.
  • To maintain a flexible approach in line with the company's ethos it may be necessary for the Master to undertake additional roles and responsibilities commensurate with their experience and ability.
  • The Master is not to leave the vessel after work unless all the vessel affairs are in order.
