Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS)

ECDIS is now a mandatory requirement for OOW (yachts less than 3000GT), Chief Mate (yachts less than 3000 GT), Master (yachts less than 500 GT and 3000 GT).

If you are applying for a Master Code Vessel, less than 200 GT, Certificate of Competency and do not complete an MCA-approved ECDIS course you will receive the following limitation:

‘From the 1 January 2017 this certificate is not valid for service on ships fitted with ECDIS’

The general objective of this Electronic Chart Display & Information System training course (which is based on the IMO model course 1.27.) is to enhance navigational safety by the safe operation of ECDIS equipment, proper use of Electronic Chart Display & Information System related information and knowledge of the limitations of ECDIS equipment.

Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Get an overview of the ECDIS and understand the difference between a raster & vector chart.
  • Appreciate the capabilities and limitations of an ECDIS.
  • Operate an Electronic Chart Display & Information System and use its functions for safer navigation.

  • Theory of Electronic Chart Display & Information System,
  • Regulations and requirements governing the use of Electronic Chart Display & Information Systems,
  • Knowledge of raster and vector charts,
  • Capabilities and limitations of Electronic Chart Display & Information System equipment,
  • Practical knowledge of the various features of the Electronic Chart Display & Information System,
  • Rules of ENC/SENC data presentation,
  • Practical passage planning on the Electronic Chart Display & Information System,
  • Practical route monitoring on the Electronic Chart Display & Information System,
  • Simulator exercises using the Electronic Chart Display & Information System,
  • Back-up arrangements and operational requirements,
  • Alarms and indications settings and management,
  • Practical ENC data updating.
