Proficiency in Medical Care (STCW A-VI/4-2)
Prerequisites
- The candidate must be at least 16 years of age
- Hold a Proficiency in Medical First Aid Certificate (STCW A-VI/4-1) or a Proficiency in Medical Care On-Board Ship certificate or its updating training (STCW A-VI/4-2)
- ENG1 medical certificate, or equivalent, as an indicator of fitness or an assessment for fitness carried out by LJMU
Assessment
Formative assessment of practical skills combined with summative assessment of underpinning knowledge and competencies achieved during training
Teaching
Theory lectures combined with practical hands on training sessions to enhance learning. Candidates are expected to spend additional time on home work that encompasses revision of the topics covered and/or preparation for assessments.

MCA as per the STCW Code section STCW A-VI/4-2
Course Description
This course is designed to prepare ship’s masters or other persons in charge of medical care on-board ships so that they can provide medical care to the sick and injured while they remain on board and also participate in co-ordinated schemes for medical assistance to ships.
Upon successful completion of the course, all candidates receive an STCW Proficiency in Medical Care Course certificate which must be obtained prior to undertaking any Chief Mate or Master level Certificate of Competency (CoC) examinations for deck officers.
