This 15-day 105 hour course of instruction is designed to provide entry level engine department personnel with the ability to upgrade his or her credentials through knowledge and understanding of the subjects covered in USCG QMED/Oiler exams and is approved "in lieu of examination" by the United States Coast Guard. 

Required topic llisted under CFR 46 Part 12. Subpart 12. 15-19 paragraph (b) (1) include knowledge in the use of hand tools and measuring instruments, firefighting, piping systems, safety precautions, combustible fuels, boilers, electrical safety and theory, engine room auxiliaries, damage control, pollution laws and regulations, ship construction, principles of refrigeration, hydraulics, filters and strainers, motor paints, pneumatics, pumps, steering gear, deck machinery and air compressors. 

Unlicensed Engine Department members must have a minimum of 180 days of service as a wiper or equivalent to qualify for any QMED training.
