This five day course in Proficiency in Medical Care on Board Ship is appropriate to anyone who is designated to take charge of medical care on board ship as well as people undertaking blue water sailing. On successful completion of the course you will have sufficient knowledge of the types of ships medical equipment and stores and their use to be able to:
- Diagnose medical problems on board ship
- Provide medical care to the sick and injured while they remain on board
- Participate in co-ordinated schemes for medical assistance to ships
This course is a natural progression from the MCA Proficiency in Medical First Aid on Board Ship Course in that it teaches you to diagnose illnesses and injuries and how to underake long term care of a casualty on board. It covers
- Making a diagnosis
- The cardiovascular and respiratory systems
- The abdomen
- ENT, dental and ophthalmic
- Communicable diseases
- Wounds and injuries
- Equipment and information
- Patient management - general
- Patient management - specific
The course will be a combination of lectures, case studies, role play and practical sessions including suturing, catheterisation, giving injections and medication.
Before commencing on this course you must be over 16 years old and have received MCA approved or recognised training in Medical Proficiency in Medical First Aid on Board Ship (in accordance with Section A-VI4-1 of the STCW code) and have been issued with the certificate.
The course which is run from our training centre in Emsworth Yacht Harbour starts at 9.00am and finishes at approximately 5.30pm.
Tea, coffee and all equipment to complete the course including the St Johns / Red Cross First Aid Manual will be provided. You just need to bring a notepad. Lunch can be obtained from the Deck Cafe on site or the village which is a short walk away or alternatively bring a packed lunch with you.
The MCA STCW Proficiency in Medical Care on Board Ship Course is in accordance with Regulation VI/4 of the Annex to the STCW Convention and Section A-VI/4(4-6) of the STCW Code and the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Regulations 1997.
