General Manager/Harbour Master (Canal & River Trust) – London – 12-18months FTC

ARM is delighted to be the exclusive recruitment partner of the Canal & River Trust in the search for a General Manager/Harbour Master to be based in their Docklands office.

This is a truly unique opportunity to manage the harbour and oversee all sea-going and inland water craft within Docklands, including lock and bridge operations.

This position is also the local representative of the Trust with internal stakeholders, users, visitors, volunteers and other community representatives, thus will be responsible for leading and motivating a team of colleagues and volunteers in operating the waterway network/harbour.

Other key responsibilities include (but not exhaustive to);

  • Driving continuous improvement in Harbour Safety, operations and efficiency and ensuring compliance with PMSC and other relevant legislation.
  • Developing and implementing a programme of works that address key customer concerns – effectively, improving standards and engaging people.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues for the completion of works, delivery of wider Trust wellbeing, engagement and promotional activities.
  • Ensuring sufficient resources are available to handle all harbour vessel movements safely and efficiently.
  • Identifying and implementing opportunities for efficiencies in order to achieve budgetary targets each year.

The ideal candidate will have extensive operational management experience within a Maritime environment and have an excellent track record of leading, motivating and developing a team.

You will have all-encompassing commercial acumen, including cost control and managing budgets, along with a true desire to consistently deliver an excellent customer and visitor experience.

The successful candidate will have a Harbour Masters’ Diploma or other relevant marine qualification and have an extensive understanding of the Port Marine Safety Code and all relevant port/dock legislation.

This position is for a 12-18 months fixed term contract, as the main focus is during a period of change management; to develop, coach and mentor the existing teams, identify areas of untapped opportunity  and to fully prepare the Trust for succession planning.

On offer is a competitive salary package and an excellent and unique opportunity to work with the Canal and River Trust to make a difference.
